Does this need a reload?

Half the shift editor needs one and half doesn't. Reloading when you didn't have to costs a minute; skipping one you needed means the solver never sees your change. You don't have to memorise this — when a reload is genuinely required the amber banner appears and Start solve won't fire until you reload. No banner, nothing to reload.

The banner is not always about you. Staleness is decided on the server for the whole date — a colleague's break appears on your screen too. And it says “driver breaks” even for a service stop: both are the same kind of record underneath, so if you just added a refuel stop and the banner talks about breaks, your stop registered.

Reading the annotation layer

Two amber marks, two meanings — they are not decoration:

cursor = what you act on ring = what changed as a result

The banner inside the mock app is a different amber on purpose — it's the product's own warning colour, boxed inside the stage. The teaching marks always float on top of the app, never inside it.

Two saves, not one

Times, garages and the disable switch wait for Save — close with Cancel and they're gone.
Breaks and service stops save the instant you press Add. They write straight to the shared schedule; a colleague sees them within seconds, and Cancel will not take them back. The undo is Remove.
A stop with a Repeating badge came from a recurring series and can't be removed here — manage it in Recurring service stops, which edits the whole series.
Overlapping breaks and stops warn but don't block — a break inside a service-stop window is sometimes exactly what you meant.

A greyed-out Save is usually Hours of Service

Saving is blocked if the shift breaks any of the three limits, not just the daily one:

15 hours in a single day, measured pull-out to pull-in.
8 hours rest between shifts — a 22:00 finish can't start before 06:00.
60 hours across any rolling 7-day window.

The alert names the limit you hit and the latest legal time. There is no per-shift override, and the same check runs again at solve time, so a shift that slips through is refused there instead.

What the solver does with your stop

A break blocks work: nothing is served across it, and a drive that would run through it waits. The break still counts inside the 15-hour day.

A service stop is routed, not remembered: the van is planned to drive there, sit for the dwell, and carry on — placed at the earliest point where the whole day still works. Because the stop is hard, trips that no longer fit come out unassigned rather than bending it. Put the window where the van can absorb it; the cost of a bad window shows up as unassigned trips, not as an error. If no workable position exists at all, the stop is added anyway and flagged in the audit.

What's simulated here

A hand-built reproduction, not a screenshot and not the live components:

The vehicles table shows 4 of ~250 vans; the map and the rides table below it are omitted. Columns are the real eight, in the real order.
All names, units and addresses are invented. No patient or driver data appears anywhere on this page.
The service-stop form arrives pre-filled so the walkthrough can focus on what Add does; in the product you type the address and pick from suggestions.
The HOS alert's wording is the product's real format for the daily cap; the rest and 60-hour variants read similarly.
Only the controls used by this walkthrough respond. Everything else is inert.
